Brief Description

This module looks at youth work from a strategic perspective, and asks questions about its future development in a world of commissioned services and integration. Its approach is critical.

Indicative Syllabus

  • The strategic management of youth work provision;
  • Critical analysis of policy direction;
  • Commissioning, funding streams and applications
  • The relationship between statutory, private and third sector provision;
  • Integrated and inter-professional working
  • Outcomes versus process
  • The role of youth work in the public health agenda – mental and sexual health etc
  • Workforce Development
  • Sustainable Development and Succession Planning
  • The Future of Youth Work as a profession and as a vocation
  • The effectiveness of youth work in promoting equality of opportunity, the ECM outcomes and safeguarding
  • Professionalism
Learning Outcomes

i  Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Critically analyse the role of youth work within the current policy environment, including that of integration and public health;
b) Critically evaluate the need for further enhancement of the youth work services;
c) Critically evaluate funding streams and options for commissioning;
d) Critically analyse the process of workforce development and the impact of change on workforce demographics.

On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Reflect on practice;
b) Contribute to team work
c) Use information skills

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials)
Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation)
