Brief Description

This module covers outcomes 2 and 4 of the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for Children and Young People which are 'child and young person development' and 'supporting transitions' and is appropriate for anyone who wishes to work with children and young people.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Basic psychologies – Maslow, Rogers, Skinner, Beck;
  • physiological change and physical milestones from conception to age 21;
  • socialisation theory and the impact of social exclusion, poverty, class, gender and ethnicity;
  • variations in family structure across ethnic groups and the generations and its impact on parenting;
  • attachment theory and the different kinds of impaired attachment;
  • resilience theory;
  • Piaget’s model of cognitive development from birth to age 21 – the importance of play;
  • the concepts of health, wellbeing, ill-health and disability;
  • the importance of nutrition and exercise to wellbeing throughout life;
  • the major transitions for children and young people and the social changes that accompany them;
  • the impact of parenting style on development and the concept of 'good enough' parenting;
  • child abuse – an overview of the types and manifestations;
  • parental discord, divorce, separation, parental disability and death on the development of children and young people;
  • the impact of trauma and stress, including that caused by abuse and bullying;
  • the effect of childhood disability on the social context of development and milestones.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Describe the psychological, social and physiological changes that occur between conception and the age of 21;
  2. Explain the principles of attachment and resilience and the consequences of impaired attachment including mental ill health;
  3. Explore the impact of stressors such as parental discord or death, abuse, bullying, poverty, exclusion, and physical or learning disability on development;
  4. Explain the process of transition between developmental stages, the impact of inequality and diversity on these transitions and methods for facilitating positive transition;
  5. Understand the formation of morality, belief, values and ethics and the ways in which workers can facilitate a young person's exploration of them;
  6. Explain the importance of nutrition and exercise to the wellbeing of children and young people and methods of improving these.
