Brief Description

This module considers the development and maintenance of relationships with older children and young people and addresses outcome 1 of the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for Children and Young People which is effective communication and engagement with children, young people, their families and carers. It is appropriate for anyone who wishes to work with children and young people.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the purpose and value bases of work undertaken with children and young people e.g. youth work;
  • evolving social constructs of childhood and adolescence;
  • the development of identity and mental capacity;
  • emotional intelligence;
  • learning theory and informal learning as applied to young people, including the use of engagement tools;
  • communication models and skills;
  • methods of engaging and working with children and young people;
  • relationship skills and the development of trust;
  • the setting and maintenance of appropriate boundaries;
  • the need for flexibility of approach;
  • the concepts of spirituality and their relationship to wellbeing;
  • the processes of prejudice, discrimination and oppression and means for overcoming them in work with children and young people;
  • methods of challenging oppression and creating an anti-oppressive culture;
  • assessing need and interviewing;
  • the Common Assessment Framework.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Define the purpose of work with children and/or youth work;
  2. Discuss social constructs and identity formation of childhood and adolescence;
  3. Explain the elements in the communication process;
  4. Know how to engage with people and to maintain appropriate relationships and boundaries with them consistent to the value bases in work with children and/or young people e.g. youth work;
  5. Describe prejudice, discrimination and oppression and ways of countering/challenging such processes when working with children and young people;
  6. Identify ways of enabling young people to enhance their wellbeing and to access and use information to achieve their goals.
