Brief Description

This module is intended to familiarise students with the major aspects of the research processes in the adult or children and young people’s sectors. It will provide a limited opportunity for primary research and for a literature review.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Basic principles of social research and research methodology;
  • The nature of knowledge;
  • Requirements for writing a research proposal including ethical approval;
  • Development of critical appraisal skills for evaluating published research relevant to practice.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Reflect upon the importance of research for professional practice;
b) Critically discuss ethical considerations of research;
c) Evaluate the contribution of a range of approaches and methods to research;
d) Write a research proposal and know how to undertake research;
e) Critically evaluate research reports relevant to practice.

ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Search research data bases;
b) Organise and assimilate of knowledge;
c) Apply a critical approach to developing research proposals;
d) Critically read research reports.
