Brief Description

This module provides the knowledge and skill for those working with people who are both challenging systems and processes in a potentially abusive manner, and/or are behaving in ways that are contributing to their exclusion and/or are in need of emergency medical care. It is suitable for those working in any setting. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the policy, legislative and sociological context in which those working in difficult situation operate;
  • understanding and managing anger and trauma and the displacement of anger;
  • processes of trauma, exclusion, discrimination, oppression and bullying;
  • managing conflict situations;
  • first response to physical emergencies;
  • personal safety and the use and value of support mechanisms for the worker.
Learning Outcomes

i Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Critically analyse the neurological and social basis of challenging behaviour;
b) Analyse the processes of oppression and bullying, its impact on individuals and critically evaluate and apply methods for its management;
c) Critically analyse and apply the process of conflict resolution;
d) Evaluate strategies for the management of challenge including prevention of triggers, harm reduction and self preservation;
e) Critically evaluate ways of assuring personal safety;
f) Analyse the components of first response to medical emergencies.
g) Lead the work of others who are working in areas of conflict.

a) Manage situations of physical and emotional challenge;
b) Self-manage their own safety and stress response to difficult situations;
c) Safely and effectively perform acute/emergency care skills;
d) Lead others.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Student directed learning: 60%
Work based learning: 20%
