This module covers the skills and knowledge needed to manage people within a setting and is linked to the management standards. |
Indicative Syllabus |
- People management, training and supervision;
- Appraisals, disciplinary and grievance procedures;
- Managing young adults; including young people in management processes;
- Quality assurance and performance monitoring;
- Equal opportunity in employment situations
- Personnel issues and basic knowledge of employment law
- Volunteers – recruitment, induction, involvement and training

Learning Outcomes |
i Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to: a) Justify organisational structures in the context of organisational goals including the level of involvement of young people; b) Critically evaluate models of team structure and team leadership; c) Critically analyse methods of recruiting, selecting, inducting, supervising, appraising, disciplining and training staff and volunteers including the participation of young people; d) Apply employment law including that of equality of opportunity dismissal and redundancy; e) Compare and contrast different models of work allocation and work load management;f) Monitor performance and quality assure practice against standards;
ii. Skills On successful completion of the module the students should be able to: a) Manage own resources and development; b) Develop productive relationships with stakeholders and colleagues; c) Supervise and train others. |

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials) Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation) |
