Brief Description |
This module introduces the theory and practice of community work and community profiling and has a special emphasis on the development of services to meet local community need. |
Indicative Syllabus |
This module will cover the following topics:
- The nature of community, locale and neighbourhood, the local, international and global context;
- Communities of interest;
- The theory of social capital and sustainable community;
- Community work – Development/Action/Cohesion/Equal Opportunity/ The development of relationships and trust;
- Community profiling – what, how and where?
- Power;
- Locality hubs and community development;
- Housing policies and practices and their role in community
- Housing provision and its relationship to provision for young people
- Analysis of the extent to which policies and procedures are important to good practice and how they can be improved

Learning Outcomes |
i Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to: a) Critically analyse the nature of community and of its social capital; b) Investigate the needs of a group of people in a locality using the tools of community profiling; c) Evaluate community development practice;d) Analyse the mechanisms for enabling excluded groups to represent themselves in the context of a community; d) Critically analyse the role of housing in community processes and the processes of interaction with housing providers; e) Assess the impact of health promotion methods within a community.
ii. Skills On successful completion of the module the students should be able to: a) Gather and analyse information in the context of a community profile; b) Engage with a community; c) Empower people in a community; c) Promote health and wellbeing. |

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials) Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation) |
