Brief Description

The module aims to support the development of the knowledge base and aspects of the skills needed to demonstrate the individual and staff development elements of the Management and Leadership Award in care. It explores the potential of mentoring , coaching and supervision as critical tools in professional development and human resource management and develops skills through supporting reflection of practice in the workplace or at University. It is suitable for those aspiring to a first line management position or those new to this position as well as those seeking competence in this area for their own practice. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • definitions and models of mentoring, coaching and supervision;
  • the process of mentoring, coaching and supervision from agreement to evaluation;
  • the benefits of mentoring, coaching and supervision to the training and career development processes in the business and the public sector;
  • application of mentoring to social inclusion;
  • the ethics of mentoring, coaching and supervision- role characteristics and experiences of mentors/ coaches/supervisors;
  • issues of authority and ownership;
  • the knowledge, skills and attributes needed by mentors, coaches and supervisors;
  • the conditions required for the development of effective mentoring, coaching and supervision schemes within an institution or organisation.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Differentiate the nature, commonalities and differences between mentoring, coaching and supervision;
b) Explain the contribution of mentoring, coaching and supervision to the initial and continuing development of the mentor/coach/supervisor and mentee/ coachee/supervisee;
c) Justify the need for contracts, boundaries ethical values and their relationship to dilemmas and conflicts within the various models of mentoring;
d) Identify the stages of mentoring, coaching and supervision;
e) Exemplify ways of coaching the skills of another person;
f) Assess ways of supporting reflective learning in the mentee and mentor through the process of mentoring;
g) Argue for ways in which the managerial aspects of supervision can be enhanced.



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Use communication skills to mentor, coach or supervise;
b) Contribute to team work
c) Practice reflectively to manage the development of others
d) Use information skills to monitor compliance with quality systems.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials)
Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation)
