Brief Description

A practical introduction to the main parameters and practice of using advice and guidance principles of counselling, advocacy and feedback when working with young people in an informal setting

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Vocational choice and development theories;
  • Client guidance needs using reflection on students’ own life experience;
  • Examination of models of guidance including Egan and Bedford;
  • Development of interview skills through practice and reflection;
  • Using advocacy on behalf of clients;
  • Involvement of parents and other third parties in the guidance process.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module participants will be able to:
a) Evaluate the guidance needs of individuals using evidence based on analysis of own life experience
b) Work with clients and knowledge and understanding of vocational choice and development theories
c) Engage with a range of helping models to develop effective and ethical strategies for use with individuals in a variety of guidance situations



ii.Skills
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate the interviewing skills necessary to work with a range of clients;
b) Identify relevant client groups and research the needs of these, demonstrating the capacity to market, negotiate and adjust provision effectively within a variety of institutional contexts

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials)
Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation)
