Brief Description

This module will introduce principles and practices relating to promoting integrated working across the young peoples’ workforce.  It will compare and contrast different institutional arrangements for integrating services which bring together social care, education, the youth service – community and justice –based bodies  and the third sector and will consider especially the issues of disability and public health.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • The concepts behind current policy of integration and working to targets;
  • Models of integration emerging nationally including locality hubs;
  • The theory of partnership working and of working in partnership with young people;
  • Organisation theory and the impact of role, boundary, flexibility and style on the ability of agencies to work cooperatively;
  • The aims, objectives and organisation of multi-agency and multi-professional working;
  • Identification of the generic and specialist skills and distinguishing theoretical approaches of youth work, youth justice, advice and guidance and the young people’s substance misuse services;
  • Identification of other services for young people and the extent to which they use specialist skills and theoretical approaches;
  • Kinds of impairment: physical, learning, sensory or mental health
  • The social model of disability and its implications for joint working;
  • Public health policy and the contribution of integrated services for young people on policies for obesity and teenage pregnancy
  • Issues arising from joint working in the context of the ECM outcomes, particularly safeguarding;
  • Issues arising from the different value bases/ codes of ethics and political orientation of each group of workers;
  • Issues arising from the different funding streams for different kinds of organisation;
  • Issues arising for people with physical, learning, sensory or mental health difficulties;
  • The theory behind the skills of networking, negotiation and the management of conflict needed for successful integrated working;
  • The impact of separating services for children and young people from those for adults in terms of managing transition and skills mix;
  • The impact of commissioning and increased use of the third sector on service provision, quality assurance, inspection and transition.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
a) Critically evaluate the concepts behind partnership working, integrated services and emergent models of integration including that of locality hubs;
b) Understand the public health agenda and its implications for practice;
c) Understand the nature and variety of disability, the implications of the social model of disability for the work of the integrated services;
d) Analyse the transition between youth and adulthood and its implications for service provision and entitlement for people with a disability and for people without a disability;
e) Analyse the implications of the changing landscape of service delivery for professional identity, the skills mix of the workforce and training and the involvement of young people.

i. Skills
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
a) Network, negotiate and the manage conflict;
b) Communicate across organisational and professional boundaries.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% (workshops and group tutorials)
Student directed learning: 80% (practice based learning experiences, learning sets, student directed learning, assignment preparation)
