Brief Description	The aims of the module are to: explore concepts of community and the nature of communities as a context for professional practice and ministry; investigate historical, political, social and economic factors affecting the development of policy; to explore dominant and countervailing ideologies and theologies that influence ministerial and professional practice; enable students to gain an understanding of and commitment to anti- oppressive practice, and apply this in the development and implementation of policy at the macro and micro levels.
Indicative Syllabus	This module explores a variety of factors shaping the context in which youth & community work and church/ministerial practice takes place; critically evaluates explicit and implicit ideologies informing these, and develops skills in community profiling and anti-oppressive practice
Learning Outcomes	At the end of the module students should be able to: Knowledge and Understanding a) understand the context in which youth & community work takes place b) appraise the concept of ‘community’ from sociological, political and theological perspectives c) identify and comprehend factors contributing to the development of policy in the field of youth & community work and church/ministerial practice d) critically evaluate dominant and countervailing ideologies and theologies that influence practice Disciplinary / Professional Skills e) develop the skills to conduct and reflect critically upon a profile of a community f) develop and implement appropriate policies for anti-oppressive practice in their context
Learning and Teaching Activities	Staff / student contact: 10% (lectures, seminars, role play, exercises, simulations) Student directed learning: 90%
