Brief Description The module will introduce students to a number of authors who work in a range of autobiographical styles, including confessional poetry and the confessional novel, automatic writing, life-writing, semi-autobiographical fiction, epistolary writing, diary and memoir. The module will discuss the broad characteristics of life-writing as well as the questions it raises concerning the relation between, for example, fiction, fact, history, and memory. Students will discuss their own work within chosen genres as well as that of exemplary well-known authors.
Indicative Syllabus
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) articulate in a sophisticated manner several of the prominent characteristics of life-writing;
b) distinguish significantly between the characteristics of different autobiographical forms;
c) show detailed understanding of the variety of ways in which writers have used or challenged the form of confessional writing.


ii. Skills
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) illustrate in detail many of the features of life-writing;
b) write sensitively according to as well as in knowledge of the conventions of a specific sub-genre associated with writing the self.
