Brief Description The module is designed to enhance students' understanding and knowledge of the processes inherent in writing a novel and to develop their own creative writing skills.
Indicative Syllabus This module will concentrate on the craft of writing fictional prose, especially the novel. Through readings and in-class discussion, students will be able to explore the ways in which authors construct and arrange the elements of narrative, characterisation, imagery, dialogue, and style. Also, the module will provide a forum for students to read their own work in progress and learn by discussing it with their peers and tutors.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of this module, students should be able to demonstrate that they have:
a) an advanced knowledge of a range of novelistic approaches and styles;
b) reviewed and revised their own creative writing in progress through redrafting;
c) gained an understanding of a wide range of skills and techniques involved in the creative process.


ii. Skills
The module will enable students to:
a)identify and distinguish between a variety of writing techniques;
b)delineate a range of approaches to the main components of long narrative;
c)reflect upon their own writing process;
d) contribute reciprocally to the creative writing of others and articulate the processes at work in their own writing.
