Brief Description This module is designed to develop and enhance the student’s skills in the craft of writing poetry and gives them the opportunity to practice more advanced writing and critical skills. This module provides more in-depth practical help with their own poetry for students at Level 3 of the Creative Writing programme. Students will reflect on the nature and variety of their own poetic practices, and will be introduced to the practical and theoretical aspects of poetry through discussion with the peer group with particular attention to craft
Indicative Syllabus

This module is designed to:
(i) provide a critical and practical development for students who have a sound knowledge of the basic craft skills and who wish to further develop their theoretical knowledge of poetry;
(ii) familiarise students with the more advanced approaches and theories of poetry in practical terms.

Through a series of critical workshops and ‘in-class’ exercises, students will consider a range of theories in relation to poetry. They will be encouraged to think about the relation between theory and practiceand to apply what they learn to their own work.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate:
a) knowledge and understanding of, and an ability to analyse and evaluate, a range of theories related to poetry;
b) ability to analytically and evaluatively relate the theory to the work of the poet ;
c) understanding of the creative relationship between theory and practice.




ii. Skills

By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) discuss, analyse and evaluate a range of theories related to poetry;
b) demonstrate the ability to integrate a variety of theories and use the theoretical work of other poets to inform their own creative work;
c) work collaboratively in critiquing and learning from the theories discussed.
