Brief Description

This module will provide students with an advanced understanding of the application of their disciplines in ‘real world’ practice. The creative industries are complex and this module will explore the ‘business’ of visual communication. The module will explore the various ways in which visual communicators organise themselves –Design Groups, Advertising agencies, for example and includes the ways in which visual communications are commissioned, reproduced and marketed and the law as it relates to visual communication.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will explore the ‘business’ of visual communication, and the sustainability of creative practice and career goals within a global economy.

The programme of study will consider social, environmental and ethical issues and the potential of design to inform and raise awareness of such issues through soundly-conceived and innovative practice

The Contemporary Professional Development Lectures programme will explore various ways in which visual communicators organise themselves; the law as it relates to visual communication; the ways in which visual communications are commissioned, reproduced, distributed and marketed.

The programme includes ‘guest’ lectures drawn from a range of disciplines looking at contemporary practice, and forecasting future trends. It will encourage students to explore the broader cultural context of visual communication and evidence the positive influence of awareness and inter-relationship with other creative media such as literature, music, and cinema.

A short work placement (maximum two weeks) is an option that may be undertaken as part of this module.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Critically assess the role and impact of visual communication in national and global contexts
  2. Analyse audience engagement, interaction and influence on the development of visual communication
  3. Understand and critically appraise the value and role of organisational structures encountered in the creative industries
  4. Understand the relationship between client, producer, audience and artefact
  5. Identify, evaluate and assimilate creative and innovative skills employed in the creative industries to the context of a cross disciplinary practice
  6. Debate and engage with cultural, political and environmental concerns and perspectives on the social responsibilities of those working within the creative industries
  7. Employ a knowledge of legal and ethical issues pertaining to the creative industries
  8. Effectively communicate and negotiate with individuals or groups to achieve objectives.
  9. Identify and implement effective marketing and promotion methodologies
  10. Critically reflect on the role and relationship of transferable skills in future employability and career progression
  11. Critically reflect on the potential value of working in groups/teams/action learning sets
  12. Develop a personal action plan for the future development of skills
