Brief Description | This module contextualises cross-disciplinary approaches and provides research opportunities through critical analysis of historical and contemporary applications of visual communication. At the heart of the module a series of lectures illuminate and explore different aspects of visual media and its applications. The module will introduce research methodologies and analytical skills including reviewing literature, key sources, research ethics. |
Indicative Syllabus | Questioning existing practice, experimenting and innovating comes from a position of being well-informed. This module is key to developing understanding of the strengths of reflective practice and an underpinning for the methodologies through which it is achieved and presented. Students on this module should develop an informed appreciation of the fundamental importance of research in relation to interrogating practice and practices, developing creative thinking, exploring ideas and making judgments that are critically informed. Content will integrate the development of postgraduate-level research skills including primary and secondary research skills, essay structuring, and presentation skills to provide a preparation and foundation for theoretical and practice based research. The module will encourage the recognition of the importance of excellent communication and social skills in order to encourage collaboration, and to be articulate and engaging in the presentation of work and ideas. A ‘pitch’ at the beginning of the module in advance of research, and a presentation to the cohort disseminating research will provide opportunity to demonstrate verbal, visual and social skills. Skill in written communication will be demonstrated through assignments. |
