Brief Description This module provides students with the opportunity to study a self-managed, analytical piece of work where they will conduct a literature-based academic investigation related to Tourism Management. It is recommended that LSM203, or equivalent Research Methods module, is taken in preparation for the Investigative Study.
Indicative Syllabus The content of this module will be related to a topical issue within the Tourism Management area. It will provide scope for the student to demonstrate their ability to learn independently, research, analyse, synthesise and evaluate appropriate literature. Students will select a Tourism Management related title from a range that will be made available
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Critically evaluate information and literature, relating to their chosen title
b) Reflect upon the approach adopted within the literature and identify its strengths and weaknesses
c) Analyse a problem or subject
d) Synthesise ideas into appropriate conclusions
e) Evaluate alternatives and make recommendations where appropriate.



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:
Communications and literacy: presenting effective discussion of relevant theory; construction of a personal position case/argument incorporating the use of appropriate terms, diagrams and tables to evaluate concepts presented in the literature that supports their findings.
Problem solving: Demonstrating extensive investigative skills to support their case/arguments; selection of appropriate sources of information; demonstrating a recognition of different research approaches; developing conclusions and/or recommendations as a result of their investigation.
Independent learning and working: through completing a sustained self-directed piece that necessitates self-reliance, planning, flexibility, managing information, reflection and resilience.
Information and communications technology: by, at a minimum, presenting material that meets the requirements for the format and layout of the assessment.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 3% (max. 4 hours), meetings with tutor.
Student directed learning: 97%, including reading, investigation and other tasks, which will vary according to the individual topic.
