Brief Description This module aims to develop a critical awareness of the physical and social environment in which adventure and sports tourism takes place. It provides the opportunity for students to understand and develop management solutions to minimise the negative and maximise the positive impacts of adventure and sports tourism.
Indicative Syllabus This module requires students to review the role of people and places in the adventure and sports tourism context. The module content will cover the areas of: balancing the needs of physical environments and people; principles of ecology; conservation and environmental management; management solutions for outdoor environments; managing for people and community led sport and adventure tourism; land use conflict management; environmental and social auditing - ethical dilemmas and attaching values; using best practice case studies.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) Critically analyse the relationship between the ecological and socio-cultural environments of adventure and sports tourism.
b) Demonstrate a critical awareness of the imperative for sustainable provision of adventure and sports tourism.
c) Demonstrate a critical understanding of managing the natural adventure and sports tourism environment.
d) Critically understand the importance of managing environmental resources as a key aspect of managing the adventure and sports tourism experience.

Students will be given the opportunity to develop their key skills in the following areas during the course of this module:
a) Communication and literacy
b) Problem solving
c) Independent learning and workingd) Working together
e) Specific vocational skills: plan and design practical activities using appropriate techniques and recognising ethical and safety issues.
