Brief Description This module allows students to examine closely two issues of current concern within the tourism industry. The module takes the perspective that tourist activity takes place within a socio-political context and tourism managers must be sensitive to emerging issues which affect the industry.
Indicative Syllabus Content may vary to take account of international developments affecting tourism, but topics that may be included are: political ideology and its effect on tourism, the effects on tourism of political instability, economic crises, sustainability including environmental issues such as major oil spills, countries formerly closed to tourists, the significance of the predicted rise in air passenger numbers, developments in dark tourism and the importance of gay tourism, barriers to tourism from stereotypes of cultural identity, cross-cultural understanding and world peace as a by-product of tourism, the impacts of changes in international law, or business operation on tourism flows, transportation networks and tourism business operation.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) apply the knowledge and understanding already acquired through Levels I and II, to critically evaluate current issues;
b) critically analyse the relevance and contribution made by different study subjects to synthesise multi-disciplinary explanations for tourist activity.
c) critically evaluate the significance of political and cultural processes and ideologies upon current activities within the tourism industry.
