Brief Description This module introduces the key operational aspects of planning and providing adventure and sports tourism activities for consumers in the physical environment, to include both tour- and facility-based operations.
Indicative Syllabus The module analyses the operational logistics of adventure and sports tourism, and establishes how these should be managed in an effective and sustainable way to satisfy all stakeholders. The module covers the public sector, the voluntary non-profit sector and commercial organisations, highlighting their differing needs. It also examines the service needs of adventure and sports tourism participants. The module makes use of operations management theoretical frameworks to underpin the practical aspects.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) Analyse the service needs of adventure and sports tourism participants
b) Use service operations theoretical frameworks to analyse adventure and sports tourism operations.
c) Analyse the impacts of adventure and sports tourism operations on the natural and physical environment.
d) Analyse the operational management and organisational imperatives for providing adventure and sports tourism services in the public, voluntary non-profit and commercial sectors.

Students will be given the opportunity to develop their key skills in the following areas during the course of this module:

e) Specific vocational skills: plan and design practical activities using appropriate techniques and recognising ethical and safety issues.

Staff / student contact: 16% (including lectures and tutorials).
Student directed learning: 84% (including independent study reading and tasks as detailed in the module guide, and assessment preparation).
