Brief Description The focus of this module is the operational context associated with delivering heritage tourism as a product and visitor experience. It introduces management options, strategies and rationales in delivering heritage as a tourism product.
Indicative Syllabus This module requires the student to be able to identify how heritage tourism managers operate to deliver their products. In particular the focus lies in understanding that managers of different types of heritage tourism product employ generic approaches to achieve strategic objectives while also acknowledging that some heritage tourism products require specific strategies to maintain their heritage base. Case studies from across the heritage tourism sector serve to illustrate the issues associated with the use and management and, where applicable, the conservation of heritage by tourism managers and how the needs of the consumer are met.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
on completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate an ability to analyse:
a) Key operational and strategic tasks associated with developing and managing a heritage tourism product;
b) Key operational issues associate with managing and delivering a heritage tourism product;
c) How heritage tourism managers address the preservation and conservation of their heritage tourism resource;
d) How heritage tourism managers address ethical concerns and issues associated with the commodification and consumption of heritage; and,
e) How heritage tourism managers address the demands and needs of consumers.



ii. Skills
Students will be given the opportunity to develop their key skills in the following areas during the course of this module:
a) Application of numerical techniques
b) Communication and literacy
c) Problem solving
d) Independent learning and working
e) Working with others

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff / student contact: 20% (lectures, tutorials and workshops), field visit 5%, student directed learning: 75%
Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 60% Coursework: Standard (2500 words or equivalent)
002: 40% Coursework: Group Presentation (20 minutes)
