Brief Description This module examines the positive impacts (benefits) and negative impacts (costs) which tourism activities have on host environments, economies and societies. With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, this module introduces a number of methods useful for the identification and assessment of these impacts. The core tenet of the module is that the aim of sustainable tourism is to minimise costs and maximise benefits.
Indicative Syllabus This module considers the magnitude and significance of environmental, economic and socio-cultural impacts on tourism destinations and gives a critical introduction to impact research and analysis techniques. It critically reviews the impact of tourism politics at a local and national level and uses case studies from a diversity of tourism destinations to illustrate all of these impact issues.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) identify and evaluate the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism on a specific location, through a cost-benefit analysis;
b) have a critical understanding of the research methods used to undertake effective impact assessment;
c) understand how local communities, tourism managers and other decision-makers are all involved in sustainable tourism development.
d) have a critical understanding of the professional research protocols used to investigate tourism impacts.
