Brief Description This module provides students with skills in Biblical Hebrew. It is intended for those who have some previous background in the language and develops their skills to an advanced level.
Indicative Syllabus This module covers the main aspects of biblical Hebrew and provides practical reading and translation exercises from the Old Testament.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the key elements of the grammar and an advanced command of the core vocabulary of biblical Hebrew;
  • show an advanced ability to use biblical Hebrew in the exegesis of biblical texts;
  • possess advanced skills in the appropriate and critical use of linguistic and lexical tools for reading biblical Hebrew;
  • demonstrate sophisticated skills in analysis, synthesis and evaluation of selected texts and materials studied on the module.


Learning and Teaching Activities

200 hours: guided study and online seminar (100 hours), private study (100 hours).

002: 10% Coursework: Vocabulary and grammar exercise: 600 words or equivalent
003: 20% Coursework: Vocabulary and grammar exercise: 1200 words or equivalent
004: 60% Coursework: Standard: 3600 words or equivalent
