Brief Description This module studies Christian approaches to ethical questions.
Indicative Syllabus The module comprises two sections. The first examines the biblical, theological, experiential and theoretical foundations of Christian ethics. Units will encompass the moral vision of the Bible, creation, covenant, conscience, morality and law, and moral reasoning. The second section addresses a series of connected practical issues including valuing human life, war and peace, work and leisure, consumerism, addiction, food, ecology, human sexuality and disability.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  • display mastery of the biblical, theological, experiential and theoretical foundations of Christian ethics;
  • critically engage with and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of a variety of academic and contextual approaches to Christian ethics;
  • apply critically their understanding of Christian ethics to present day contexts, including contested situations;
  • critically analyse how a religious text, doctrinal formulations, experience and moral reasoning can be employed to inform ethics;
  • demonstrate an advanced ability to use appropriate philosophical, religious, experiential and theoretical approaches for ethical analysis, at the same time making appropriate critical judgements as to their value and applicability for this.


Learning and Teaching Activities

200 hours consisting of Staff/student contact time of 20 hours (study day 5 hours; online discussion and tutorials 15 hours) plus 180 hours of student directed learning (study manual 80 hours; private study 100 hours).
