Brief Description This module looks at theological understandings of Christology and Atonement from the early church to the present.
Indicative Syllabus The module consists of two parts. The first part will concentrate on a number of critical and fundamental approaches to christology that develop their own particular emphases and concerns. Access to the doctrinal tradition will be gained through a critical engagement with important representatives of each approach. Due consideration will be given to the historical and cultural context out of which each particular contribution develops. The second part will take a similar approach to the doctrine of the atonement. Different methodological concerns will be combined with an analysis of the contributions of particular theologians who represent each view.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  • critically engage with and display mastery of doctrinal formulations about the person and work of Christ in their historical context;
