Brief Description This module aims to give an understanding of the historical roots and practice of Christian worship which will enable students to evaluate today’s approaches and practice.
Indicative Syllabus This module explores Christian worship from biblical, theological, historical and experiential perspectives. After a preliminary consideration of the nature of Christian worship, the first part of the module traces the development of worship in the Early Church, focusing on time, space, sound, movement and architecture. The module then goes on to consider public prayer and the service of the word before examining the history and theology of sacraments. The last section of the module considers the renewal of worship, with practical suggestions for handling change and differing styles of worship in the local congregation, meeting the worship needs of particular groups such as children and the elderly. Finally the module looks at the link between worship and mission. Throughout the module history and theory are closely related to contemporary practice in the student’s own experience and tradition or those familiar to them, with space for discussion of related theological and pastoral concerns.
