Brief Description This module explores the study of gender and religion and the interface between religion, gender, and culture. The main focus will be on the role of gender in the Jewish, Christian (and post-Christian) and Islamic traditions, with an introduction to gender and other religions. The exploration of these issues intends to foster personal spiritual reflection in the context of Christian belief and practice. This module is part of the Religion and Ministry strand.
Indicative Syllabus This module introduces the study of gender and religion particularly from the perspective of the feminist critique of recent decades. In this context, the module examines what gender is and the ways in which it may affect personhood, spirituality and sexuality. The focus is on Christianity, but a number of other faith traditions are also considered. The effect of gender on religious experience, language, and theology will be reviewed. The effects of religious patriarchy on the spiritual self-understanding of women will be also examined. While the focus will be on women and feminism, the effect of the study of religion and gender on male understanding of religion will also be drawn in.
