Brief Description The module identifies and explores the social construction of disability as well as factors which may lead to disability, and will prove attractive to a wide range of students.
Indicative Syllabus a) Concepts of disability.
b) Causation of disability.
c) Individual experiences of disability.
d) Resource identification and mobilisation.
e) Policy and legislation; current thinking and issues relating to provision for diabled people.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
a) demonstrate an understanding of the causes and consequences of a range of disabilities;
b) analyse the consequences of the social model of disability for disabled people and their families and carers, for social policy and for professionals
c) appreciate the impact of various aspects of social policy and legislation on the lives of disabled people and their carers, throughout the life cycle;
d) empathise with the experience of disability and anti-disablist opinions



ii. Skills

On completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate:
a) a range of transferable skills, particularly essay writing, literature finding and independent reading
b) the ability to develop and maintain an academic argument

c) the ability to use evidence appropriately in support of academic arguments
