Brief Description This module, which uses an enquiry and action learning approach, based on specific case studies, identifies and explores the social construction of disability and the levels of discrimination experienced by disabled people. Ways of working in partnership within an anti-oppressive framework will be examined, and the statutory framework of community care assessment and care management will be reviewed. The emphasis will be on partnership with service users, empowerment, direct payments and independent living.
Both elements of the assessment are non-compensatory.
Indicative Syllabus a) Individual experiences of disability b) Medical and social models of disability c) Policy and legislation d) Working in partnership with disabled people and identifying resources e) Community care assesment and care management f) Direct payments and independent living
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Evaluate the social and medical models of disability and identify specific anti-disablist approaches to social work intervention
b) Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and consequences of a range of impairments;
c) Analyse the impact of various aspects of social policy and legislation on the lives of disabled people and their carers, throughout the life cycle;
d) Identify resources and methods of intervention when working with disabled people which promote independence


ii. Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a) Groupwork
b) Research
c) Personal reflection
Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact circa 20% (to include visiting speakers, experiential learning, lectures, video, group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include reading and assignment preparation, personal research and visits)
Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 50% Coursework: Standard: 1500 words or equivalent
002: 50% Practical Exam: Oral Examination: Individual Presentation: 10 minutes
