Brief Description

This module explores the concepts of substance misuse and dependence.  Students will examine theories and explanations concerning the aetiology and social construction of substance-related behaviours along with methods of assessment and intervention.  Links between mental health and substance misuse are explored (including dual diagnoses), as are links with harm to self and others.  Current research, methods of treatment and services available are examined to inform practice.

Indicative Syllabus

This module addresses the complex challenges faced by social workers intervening with individuals and families with substance-related problems.  Theories of substance misuse and dependence, categories of drugs, and rationales for intervention will be addressed.  Issues relevant to assessment will be addressed.  Strategies for intervention including statutory mental health interventions will be explored.

Learning Outcomes

i.  Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
1.  Describe and critique a range of theoretical perspectives that offer explanations about substance misuse
2.  Demonstrate a critical awareness of chemical differences between different categories of drugs of misuse
3.  Analyse and reflect on misusers’ experiences and the implications of their misuse of family and personal dynamics and relationships
4.  Demonstrate a capacity to evaluate models, philosophies and treatment of options available to substance misusers
5.  Analyse and reflect on demographic variables relevant to substance misuse and dependence (young people, women, ethnicity, etc.)



ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate the:
1.  Capacity to assess signs and symptoms of substance misuse and dependence
2.  Ability to apply assessment skills to treatment planning
3.  Ability to document and record substance-related histories and assessment, including court-related reporting
4.  Ability to apply relevant statutory implications to treatment planning
5.  Capacity to contribute to collaborative evaluations and interventions
