Brief Description This module introduces students to the principles of first-line management in social care. Beginning with self-and time-management, students go on to explore the management of activities, people, resources, information, quality and projects across the social care sector. Particular attention is paid to staff supervision, team leadership and the management of group care.

The assessments are non-compensatory.

Indicative Syllabus Students begin with an exploration of self-management and time management strategies before going on to study the six core elements of the first-line management task: managing activities; managing people; managing resources; managing information, managing quality and managing projects. Further themes include the role of the team leader; the place of professional supervision in social care and the management of group care.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Identify strategies for self- and time - management
b) Describe and analyse the six core strands of the management task: management of activities; management of people; management of resources; management of information; management of quality; management of projects
c) Apply their developing understanding of management principles and practice to team leadership; professional supervision and the management of group care.



ii. Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a) Self - management
b)  Working in teams
c)  Application of theory to practice (and vice-versa)

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact : circa 20% (to include experiential learning, lectures, video, group work)
Student independent study:  circa 80% (to include reading and assignment preparation, and personal research)
