Brief Description The focus of this module is upon identifying and accessing sources of research information; becoming familiar with the language used in research and being able to evaluate research in terms of its usefulness for social work practice. The module enables students to pursue an area of academic interest related to their practice through the development of an individual programme of study negotiated with an appropriate tutor.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will introduce students to the growth in Evidence Based Practice and the implications for their own practice and continuing professional development. Students will develop skills in using a variety of databases and search facilities. They will become familiar with the language of research and develop skills in evaluating published research.

This module will also provide students with the opportunity to research an area of particular interest within the Social Work/ Social Care field arising out of their experiences on placement and personal or professional development.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of Evidence Based Practice
  • Be familiar with the language of research
  • Evaluate published research
  • Critically evaluate literature in a selected area of study
  • Critically reflect upon the relevance of the literature for practice.

ii. Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:

  • Searching for research using a variety of tools
  • Working collaboratively to broaden their knowledge of different research methods
  • Evaluating published research
  • Selecting and justifying a relevant area of study
  • Formulating key questions
  • Planning and negotiating an appropriate programme of study
  • Sustaining independent study and self-evaluation
  • Reflecting on practice in the light of new experience

iii. Values
Students will be able to recognise some of the ethical considerations involved in conducting research.
