Brief Description This module addresses variables that influence assessment, decisions about, and responses to levels of risk across the lifespan. Theoretical perspectives on risk, resilience and protection are considered. Issues of attachment and disparities in power will be addressed. Socio-political and legal contexts of prevention, risk and protection will be discussed. The module will apply across both child and adult service areas and include contributions from service users.
Indicative Syllabus
  • Psychosocial perspectives on origins and control of harmful behaviours
  • Assessment skills and decision making in practice
  • Collaborative decision making
  • Intervention skills
  • Dynamics of working with service users and carers
  • Concepts of partnerships, advocacy, and collaboration
  • Report-writing, effective documentation
  • Key legislation and concepts regarding protection of and advocacy for vulnerable children and adults
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding

  • Ability to analyse the social worker’s duties and responsibilities in assessing and managing risk
  • Ability to identify key legislation underpinning policies and procedures relating to the protection of vulnerable people
  • Ability to reflect on the processes influencing professional judgements and decision-making
  • Ability to assess, manage and minimise risk to self and colleagues

  • Development of assessment and professional judgement making skills
  • Capacity to analyse complex information regarding cases
