Brief Description This triple module represents 100 day work placement. Social work students are expected to familiarise themselves with the work and processes of the approved agency in which they are placed. Students are expected to work within the framework of the profession’s Code of Conduct and National Occupational Standards. The students undertake work with the supervision of a practice assessor. In addition to the module descriptor and guide a comprehensive handbook supports this module together with Moodle for students and a separate Moodle resource for practice assessors. Placements are also supported with a series of workshops and regular visits from University tutors.

This module takes place in university and in approved placement agencies.

Aspects of the assessment include a portfolio and case study. Both elements are non-compensatory.

Indicative Syllabus A practice placement, during which students will familiarise themselves with the agency, its roles and tasks, and then begin to carry out its work under the supervision of a practice assessor.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Analyse and describe the agency in which they have been placed, its mission, structure and organisation
b) Demonstrate they are acquiring the knowledge underpinning the national occupational standards as they begin to practice social work
c) Show that they are beginning to integrate their understanding of key social work theories, explanations and ideas with their knowledge of the organisation and the work that it carries out.

ii. Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a) communication
b) group work
c) relationships
d) making good use of supervision and professional guidance

Learning and Teaching Activities

Learning at university uses a range of methods including lectures, presentations by service users and practitioners, case studies, small group seminars and presentations. This learning takes place during induction days and a series of recall days when students return to university from placement.

The students attend placement full- time and learn through supervised practice, with teaching in placement, learning from feedback from observed practice and discussion in supervision
