Brief Description

The module provides students with an opportunity to reflect critically on the methods and purposes of their subject and/or practice, within the broad context of enquiry, including training in specific methods and/or techniques as preparation for research or professional practice. The module also deals with specific issues relating to research within the context of sport, health, social care and playwork.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine

a) The planning of an effective search strategy for use with a variety of sources of information and data

b) Definition of context and formulation of questions for primary and secondary research

c) Methodological and epistemological approaches used within sport, health, social care and playwork settings

d) Ethical issues in differing settings and University guidelines

e) Methods of data collection

f) Methods of data analysis including the use of computer-assisted data analysis systems

g) Tools to assist with critical appraisal

h) Use of differing dissemination approaches for data and information

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

  1. Identify the epistemological stances underpinning sport, health, social care and playwork research
  2. Produce documentary evidence of search strategies to find relevant evidence from a variety of sources;
  3. Demonstrate critical awareness of the range of different methodologies used within different areas of practice;
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of key ethical issues in research;
  5. Develop clear research questions;
  6. Critically appraise a variety of methods of data collection
  7. and analysis linked to specific research questions methodological approaches, and underpinning philosophical positions;
  8. Demonstrate familiarity with technology to assist with data analysis;
  9. Assess the suitability of particular techniques for dissemination of new evidence for different audiences.

The Module will be delivered through a range of methods comprising intensive study days, online learning and directed independent study.
