Brief Description

This module will enable students to develop critical thinking and reflective practice skills in planning and intervening to protect and promote the welfare of children young people their families and carers.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will critically review the evidence underpinning the decisions for their plans and interventions including a critical review of the research to develop understanding of:

a)  children's developmental needs and the impact of neglect, abuse and  traumatic events on children’s developmental outcomes;
b)  effective, lawful and evidence based interventions aimed at promoting optimal outcomes for children and young people;
c)  ways of engaging with children, young people, their families and carers to promote positive family change and challenge disadvantage and discrimination;
d)  critical analysis in the use of evidence to support care plans both for children living at home and for those who are unable to live in their birth families
e)  Using evidence in the development, delivery and evaluation of services

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. critically review competing concepts and sources of evidence
  2. critically review major contributions to the knowledge base for child care practice and  key research findings for their own practice
  3. Critically evaluate a range of interventions that promote optimal outcomes for children and their evidence base.
  4. Demonstrate advanced skills in developing effective, lawful, interventions that give due weight to children’s rights and are developed in partnership with parents and others and show a clear understanding of legal and policy contexts
  5. Reflect on, analyse and critique their interventions drawing on a sound theoretical and practice base and understanding of research methods in evaluation.


Learning and Teaching Activities

The module will be delivered using a blend of teaching methods, including online materials (Moodle), workshops, online tutor support and telephone tutor support. Students will work with a practice assessor to demonstrate their skills in practice 

Staff / student contact: 20% (workshops, telephone  tutorials, on-line support) Student directed learning: 80% This will include study of on-line materials, and directed study from these materials, assembling portfolio and other assessed work, and relevant staff supervision
