Brief Description

Students from statutory and non statutory agencies in health education and social care will critically review and develop knowledge and skills for improved practice in assessing and meeting the physical and mental health needs of vulnerable children and young people with the aim of ensuring their optimal developmental outcomes.

Drawing systematically accurately and appropriately on theories of collaborative working, policy frameworks and relevant up to date research, students will creatively explore ways of working in collaboration across organisational, sectoral and professional boundaries, and in partnership with families and communities to protect children from harm and promote their well being.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. The module will critically analyse the drivers for, and theoretical approaches to integrated working, inter-agency and inter-disciplinary working including the experience of service users and carers, national and local policy, international and economic factors.
  2. Particular emphasis will be placed on the requirements, opportunities for and barriers to information sharing and working across professional, organisational and sector boundaries in order to assess needs and risks and intervene to promote positive outcomes.
  3. Firmly based on ensuring the safety, and promoting the well being  of all children and young people, students will critically review and develop knowledge and skills for improved collaborative practice in assessing and meeting the physical and mental health needs of vulnerable children and young people with the aim of ensuring their optimal developmental outcomes.
  4. Students will critically review the evidence for sources of risk and resilience as it applies to children in vulnerable groups while critically evaluating practice skills, and respective roles and responsibilities in listening to and communicating with children and young people, their families and carers.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of and ability to manage the ethical and professional dilemmas in working to promote positive change while protecting children from harm, including an awareness of the complex and competing agendas in various agency settings, and the competing rights and responsibilities within families, within a clear framework of professional standards and codes of practice.
  2. Engage in collaborative problem solving, critically reviewing  the evidence base for  actively working  with and empowering those affected by poverty, discrimination and disadvantage
  3. Co ordinate, and critically review and evaluate multi agency and inter agency plans of intervention to promote positive outcomes for children and young people within the context of the theory and practice of inter-professional and inter-agency working.


Learning and Teaching Activities

The module will be delivered using a blend of teaching methods, including online materials (Moodle), workshops, online tutor support and telephone tutor support.

Staff / student contact: 20% (workshops, telephone tutorials, on-line support) Student directed learning: 80% This will include study of on-line materials, and directed study from these materials, assembling portfolio and other assessed work, and relevant staff supervision
