Brief Description This module enables students to develop an understanding of the principles of practice education and continuous professional development in social work and social care. Students will explore the theoretical underpinning and practice skills required for promoting adult learning including mentoring, supervision and the assessment of practice in the workplace and will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in practice and reflect on their learning.
Indicative Syllabus

This module enables students to develop an understanding of the principles of supervision, practice assessment and continuous professional development social work and social  care; to explore the theoretical underpinning and practice skills required for mentoring, supervision, practice education and assessment of practice in the workplace and to demonstrate their skills in practice ( with a prequalifying student) and reflect on their learning

Students must demonstrate the three domains of practice education (stage 1) as set out in the TOPSS/GSCC document 'Guidance on the Assessment of Practice in the Workplace' and the SWRB  Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work

i. Organising opportunities for the demonstration of assessed competence in practice (Domain A)
ii. Enabling learning and professional development in practice (Domain B)
iii Managing the assessment of pre qualifying students as learners in practice (Domain C)

To achieve stage 1 (aimed at Social Workers and practice supervisors)

and complete a successful direct observation to include teaching, supervising or assessing a social work student against occupational or professional standards.

Stage 2 (Restricted to Qualified Social Workers only)

Students must demonstrate domains A-C as above and also Domains D Effective continuing performance as a practice educator. The assessment and learning should include evidence of work-based competence from taking full responsibility for one social work student and one other in line with the GSCC revised wording for paragraph 49 of the PQ requirements.

And completion of two direct observations of a practice educator candidate teaching, supervising or assessing against occupational or professional standards.

Learning Outcomes

i) Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a. Understand, reflect on and analyse theories of adult learning, reflective practice and continuing professional development
b. Understand, reflect on and analyse theories of mentoring and supervision
c. Understand, analyse and reflect on principles of staff and student management and developmen
d. Understand, analyse and reflect on principles of staff and student management and development



ii) Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a. Organising opportunities for the demonstration of assessed competence in practice
b. Enabling adult learning within prequalifying practice education
c. Applying underpinning theoretical frameworks in practice to enable the development of others
d. Managing the assessment of learners in practice during  prequalifying education
e. Planning and negotiating an appropriate programme of work with an individual that involves analysis, critique, demonstration and evaluation of empowerment, models, theories and methods of adult learning, supervision, mentoring and assessment of practice.

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact circa 20% (to include visiting speakers, experiential learning, lectures, video, group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include reading and assignment preparation, personal research and group work)
