Brief Description The module will introduce students to the debates around evidence - based and evidence-informed social work practice and enable students to explore major contributions to social work and social care research and the application of evidence to practice in social work.
Students will also be introduced to the skills of critical analysis of research in social work and will develop skills in the evaluation of their own practice and the practice of others.
Indicative Syllabus

Students will review the critical debates over the contribution of evidence to social work practice and the nature of ‘evidence’ itself.

Students will develop skills in the review of literature and other forms of evidence and critically review major contributions to research in social work and social care practice and will explore the implications for their own practice.

Additionally, they will develop, analyse and review frameworks for the evaluation of their own practice and others and will consider the implications of becoming ‘practitioner-researchers’ in their own right.

Learning Outcomes

i) Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a. Critically review major contributions to research in social work practice
b. Explore, analyse and apply the implications of key research findings for their own practice
c. Review and analyse frameworks for the evaluation of their own practice and the practice of others
d. Critically review the concept of ‘practitioner-researcher’ as applied to their own practice as professional social workers



ii) Skills
There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a. Literature review and critique
b. Critical analysis and evaluation
c. Analysis and application of research evidence to practice
d. Identification and development of a research question

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact circa 20% (to include visiting speakers, experiential learning, lectures, video, group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include reading and assignment preparation, personal research and group work)
