Brief Description The module is designed to provide an opportunity for qualified practitioners from a variety of professional backgrounds to demonstrate how they have consolidated and extended their skills, knowledge and professional competence beyond the point of initial qualification. Particular attention will be paid to the demonstration of competence across the whole range of any National Occupational Standards applying to the student’s employment (as defined by the relevant sector skills council) and to the consolidation in practice of the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children’s Workforce produced in support of the Every Child Matters initiatives (for child care workers) and (for adult care practitioners) Skills for Care’s Common Induction Standards.
The module will be delivered within a clear framework of anti-discriminatory practice and collaborative working across the health and social care sector, including partnership with service users and carers.
Indicative Syllabus

Development of reflective practice; portfolio construction; evidence-based practice; integrating theory and practice; consolidation of competence in relation to the Common Core of Knowledge and Skills for the Children’s Workforce (for child care workers) and (for adult care practitioners) Skills for Care’s Common Induction Standards; demonstration of integration of knowledge and skills across the relevant National Occupational Standards for the student’s workforce; anti-oppressive practice and working with diversity. Code of Practice for Social Care Workers (where applicable) or other relevant code of ethics

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

i. Knowledge and understanding

  • Critically reflect on their practice utilizing appropriate theoretical, legal and policy frameworks
  • Demonstrate consolidation of competence in relation to the whole range of the National Occupational Standards for the student’s workforce
  • Demonstrate the integration in practice of the Common Core of Knowledge and Skills for the Children’s Workforce (for child care workers) and (for adult care practitioners) Skills for Care’s Common Induction Standards;
  • Demonstrate an explicit commitment to good ethical practice and the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers (where appropriate) or other code of ethical practice


ii. Skills. 

  • Undertake information gathering, problem solving and clear, accurate, written communication
  • Demonstrate Critical analysis and evaluation
  • Demonstrate Reflection, synthesis and the integration of theory and practice
  • Utilise learning opportunities and manage own workload
  • Earth reflection in a coherent value base with an explicit adherence to anti-oppressive practice
  • Master key academic skills in secondary research, argumentation and accurate citation of other’s work
Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/student contact circa 10% (including whole day workshops, individual tutorials, and support by electronic mail).Student contact with employer based mentors and line managers circa 5%. Student independent study circa 85% (to include reading and portfolio construction and preparation of assessed work)
