Brief Description Physical Activity Referral Schemes (PARS) are the most prevalent physical activity intervention in primary care, with over 800 schemes in operation in the UK. In this module, students will build on knowledge and skills gained in SPX215, but focus on the extent to which schemes are fit for purpose and their limitations. Contemporary approaches to evaluation will be considered, including factors influencing access to, and progression through, schemes. Students will be expected to consider the empirical evidence base, alongside their local practical experience, in determining contemporary advances in the approach to PARS in the UK.
Indicative Syllabus

Advanced practical experience, including evaluation of client progress
Exploration of the state of the empirical evidence base for PARS
Methods of evaluation of the PARS process
Application of related literature to the PARS contextContemporary advances in PARS in the UK

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Evaluate the empirical literature forming the evidence base for PARS
b) Consider the appropriateness of current methods of PARS evaluation
c) Apply relevant literature to the UK PARS context
d) Demonstrate awareness of contemporary debates in PARS
e) Evaluate client progress, drawing on a variety of sources of evidence
