Brief Description Mental health issues are of increasing prevalence in society. This module will examine the relationship between physical activity and mental health for clinical and non-clinical populations. It will integrate psychological theory with practice by drawing on examples of current interventions from within both mental health care provision and the community at large. The module will examine the relationship between exercise and mental health for those with and without mental health problems. It will provide an awareness of the increasing prevalence that exercise has within research, policy and practice for mental health.
Indicative Syllabus This module will provide the current perspectives and explore contemporary research and practice in the exercise and mental health area. It will focus on mental health issues such as mood and well-being for non-clinical populations, and clinical conditions such as anxiety and depression. It will identify the possible biopsychosocial mechanisms responsible for the relationship between mental health and exercise, and the holistic benefits of exercise for a clinical population. The role of medication in the treatment of mental illnesses will also be considered.
Learning Outcomes

i Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Critically interpret the meaning of the term 'mental health';
b) Demonstrate a critical awareness of the various mental health problems that are prevalent in society;
c) Revise and evaluate the relationship between physical activity and mental health and the mechanisms proposed for their association;
d) Critically evaluate the implementation of physical activity interventions for the treatment of mental health within health care in relation to current research, policy and practice.
e) Critically evaluate the holistic role of exercise for people with mental health problems in mental health services and the community.
