Brief Description | The module explores a number of sociological approaches to consumption in contemporary society through investigations of issues in sport media (including broadcast, narrowcast, niche, new, and virtual media), cultures of celebrity, performance, and sport consumption as a central element of everyday leisure and commercial activities. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module weaves a series of themes through various sessions. These themes include: commercialising and commodifying sport; global sports markets; the sport-media complex (NewsCorp and the Murdoch conglomerate as a case study); fans and/as sports consumers; user generated media (such as, fanzines and blogs); virtual sports practices (such as fantasy leagues, games platforms, and modified games forms such as Wii); branding, marketing and celebrity; consumer activism. |
