Brief Description | This module develops an advanced understanding of ethics across a broad range of contemporary issues but with specific reference to allied professions. The nature of ethical theory and practice is developed in relation to coaching ethics; philosophical critique of the empirical research into the possibility of moral development in and through sport and sports education; and the ethics of sport, health and exercise sciences and promotion. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module builds on the issue-driven SPX208 to develop an awareness of the theoretical bases that underpin ethics generally and the ethics of sport particularly. Through case studies in a variety of sports, students develop a sophisticated awareness of the importance of deontological, utilitarian, and virtue theories and how they affect the perception and conduct of sports players, administrators, coaches/teachers, and policy makers. Students apply ethical theory to key contemporary issues of their own choosing, in negotiation with the course tutor. |
