Brief Description This module is important for students with an interest in exercise and health. It will provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of the nature of physical activity promotion within selected groups in society. It will be of particular relevance to students who have an interest in working in physical activity promotion in the future. The module will investigate the inequalities in physical activity participation within selected populations in society. By taking an interdisciplinary approach and focusing on the inter-relationship between the physiological, psychological and sociological factors associated with participation this module will critically examine the reasons for these inequalities. The health implications of these inequalities will also be considered.
Indicative Syllabus Rationale for categorising populations as 'special'; physiological, psychological and sociological factors associated with participation; rationale for physical activity promotion for inactive populations; role of national policy and regional strategy in the development of interventions within the community.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
a) Revise and evaluate the rationale for categorising populations as 'special';
b) Critically evaluate the physiological, psychological and sociological factors associated with participation for special populations;
c) Critically appraise the rationale for physical activity promotion for inactive populations;
d) Demonstrate a critical awareness of the role of national policy and regional strategy in the development of interventions within the community.

a)   Adopt an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving;
b)   Critically appraise current policies and strategies employed by relevant agencies to address the issue of special populations.
