Brief Description Safe and effective exercise prescription will lay the foundations for those seeking careers in the public health domain or the fitness industry. This module will address the exercise needs of the general public, paying particular attention to the circumstances and objectives of the individual. These circumstances may include medical conditions and the objectives may range from basic rehabilitation to returning to competitive sport.
Indicative Syllabus The research evidence for the principles and rationale for safe and effective exercise prescription to address, for example, cardiac rehabilitation; respiratory complaints; obesity; back problems; musculo-skeletal injury; osteoporosis; pregnancy; elderly and sport specific considerations will be considered.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) evaluate the likely effects on the body of a range of exercise modalities;
b) critique how the volume and intensity of prescribed exercise may be manipulated to achieve particular objectives;
c) critically consider the factors that affect initial take-up and compliance for an exercise programme.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) problem solving
b) communication and literacy
c) independent learning and working
d) use of information and communications technology

Subject specific skills:
a) construct physical activity schedules that are safe, effective and encourage adherence;
b) adjust schedules to take into account individual, environmental and logistical factors.
