Brief Description This module will develop student understanding of how environmental conditions impact on the ability of individuals to perform physical activity. The module will consider both the physiological mechanisms through which various environmental conditions exert their effects and the possible strategies that might be adopted to minimise these effects. This module is recommended for students who may be involved in taking people to a hostile environment for sport or recreation. The module will provide students with the skills required to advise individuals on how best to prepare for performing physical activity in hostile environments. In addition, the module will be of use to anyone who has an interest in outdoor adventure type activities.
Indicative Syllabus Environmental assessment; The physics of heat exchange; Exercise in the heat; Exercise in the cold; Exercise at altitude; Diving
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) identify and make relevant environmental measurements;
b) critically evaluate the effect of the environment on an individual's ability to perform exercise;
c) appreciate the physiological mechanisms underpinning the effect of the environment;
d) assess strategies to minimise the environments effects.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

f) use of information and communications technology

Subject specific skills:
a) make environmental measurements;
b) make physiological measurements.

002: 50% Written Exam: End of year, unseen, closed book: 2.00 hours
