Brief Description This module will consider the importance of clinical nutritional knowledge for the exercise and health practitioner. It will provide an opportunity for students to plan and analyse diets for specific segments of the population. The module will be important for any student who may have to advise clients on dietary regimes, menu planning and special diet analysis in a range of contexts including catering establishments, hospitals, leisure centres and fitness clubs.
Indicative Syllabus This module will examine the role of nutrition in the prevention of disease and the maintenance of good health. Students will have the opportunity to recommend and analyse diets to aid in the maintenance of health. The role of diet will be explored in a wider societal context and will therefore be considered from a holistic perspective.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Appraise the evidence concerning the role of diet with standards of health;
b) Critically evaluate the role of clinical nutrition in maintaining health;
c) Evaluate diets and be able to create food regimes to meet differing nutritional needs;
d) Propose appropriate interventions for diet induced and related illness;
e) Evaluate the importance of exercise to good health and the inter-relationship between diet and exercise.

The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) communication and literacy;
b) independent learning and working;
c) use of information and communications technology;
d) problem solving.

Subject specific skills:
a) Use conventional specialist ICT effectively in diet analysis
b) Systematically collect conventional dietary data
