Brief Description

This module will introduce students to cardiac rehabilitation, but will primarily focus on phase IV community-based cardiac rehabilitation. Students will experience the role of exercise in phase IV, and will gain first hand experience of planning and supporting the delivering of exercise sessions for patients alongside phase IV professionals. This module will also focus of the wider management of Coronary Heart Disease considering the evidence for lifestyle change as a secondary prevention tool. Following this module, students will be well placed to consider progressing on to the British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation exercise instructor training course.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will provide students with practical experience of working with phase IV patients, and will cover the following areas:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation in the UK
  • Common cardiac conditions and special considerations for this client group
  • Phase III to IV transition
  • Risk assessment in the cardiac referral
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating exercise sessions
  • Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) risk factor management
  • Psychological considerations in the cardiac patient
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) Explain how cardiac rehabilitation is organised in the UK;
b) Provide a rationale for exercise training in cardiac rehabilitation;
c) Plan an exercise session whilst accounting for the cardiac patient considerations;
d) Reflect on an exercise session, drawing on good practice guidelines;
e) Demonstrate competence in educating patients on risk factor modification in CHD;
f) Apply the psychological theories of behaviour change to risk factor modification in CHD.
