Brief Description Physical Activity Referral Schemes (PARS) are the most prevalent physical activity intervention in primary care, with over 800 schemes in operation in the UK. Such schemes operate within a National Quality Assurance Framework. Through this module students will experience a physical activity referral scheme housed within the Faculty. Students will develop awareness of how the scheme is developed, managed and delivered from a client and quality assurance perspective. Students will work with clients on the University of Gloucestershire's physical activity referral scheme at Oxstalls campus under the supervision of exercise professionals on the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Development of PARS in the UK
National Quality Assurance Framework (NQAF)
Best practice in PARS
Patient experiences in PARS
Design, management and delivery of PARS
Scheme factors influencing attendance at, and completion of, PARS
PARS Referral categories and minimising risk

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Describe the development of PARS in the UK
b) Appreciate the importance of the NQAF
c) Identify areas of best practice within the UK PARS context
d) Empathise with the challenges and opportunities for the client
e) Establish key scheme factors likely to influence attendance at PARS

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% (lectures, practical work in fitness suite)
Student private study: 80%
